Madison Sunset

One day while exploring the area around Madison, Wisconsin, I found myself on a country road off the beaten path. While driving, I noticed movement out of the corner of my eye to the right. I looked and saw an adult red-tailed hawk flying alongside my car, about 10 feet away. I was mesmerized, but could only look for brief moments since I had to keep my focus on the road as I was driving about 45 mph.

The hawk continued flying with me for about a ½ mile, when all of a sudden he flew up to a telephone pole and looked to my left. I noticed a sign for a regional park, so I pulled in. The hawk and I exchanged glances though he continued to look out past the parking area.

I took a short walk as I could see a pond nearby. In about 20 minutes the sun began to set. The sky and pond surface was transformed into what you see in this photo. The colors were so rich and vibrant that it was hard to believe I was still on earth! I owe this photo to the hawk as I would have never thought of stopping at that park.
